What a Night!
We finally had our first night of genuine politics. Fred Thompson provided what was probably the best narration of John McCain’s story that I’ve ever heard. Most of the information he presented had been heard before, but his presentation conveyed the difficulty of the sacrifice in a way that’s extremely difficult to discount.
This was also the first time we heard a response to the Democrat’s convention. Thompson noted that for all the excitement surrounding the Democratic nominee, he really doesn’t provide anything that we haven’t heard before. He’s basically the same old-fashioned liberal politician the democrats have been putting forward over the last few decades. If there is anything substantively unique about him, it’s that he’s further to the left and significantly more partisan than previous nominees.
Senator Lieberman provided a good presentation. The delegates were respectful, and happy to hear a Democrat making the case for the Republican nominee. It’s hard to say that we were enthusiastic—it was only 8 years ago that we were doing all we could to keep him out of the White House. It was, however, a great speech.
Earlier in the day I met Rick Merkt (New Jersey candidate for governor). When he saw that I was from Minnesota, one of the first things he did was to complement the police of Minneapolis and St. Paul. He was returning to New Jersey, but said he loved his stay in the Twin Cities
