NADEAU: Wrap Up of Day 2

I've just left the convention floor to meet KSTP reporter, Brad Sattin up in their press box. We are just waiting for the 10 p.m. news to end so we can do a live webcast.

The evening was more upbeat and I think probably more like a typical convention. We had signs to hold up and energetic speakers with more of a political message. Senator Coleman was one of our first speakers welcoming everyone to Saint Paul, a city he helped invigorate after years of job loss and poor business environment.

I was really impressed with an essay written and read by Victoria Blackstone. Her topic was the stars and stripes and articulated how the flag as our nation's symbol helps us keep ties with our heritage, patriotism, and freedom. I'd love to get a copy of it.

Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann also addressed the Convention. Her speech was one of the best I've seen from her.

Captain Shanna Hanson of the Minneapolis Fire Department and one of our heroes of the bridge collapse, told us about her role as a public servant during Minnesota's biggest crisis.

The First Lady introduced President Bush. The delegates love her and I heard comments from my seatmates that she has served the country so well. I know she will be missed.

We watched a powerful movie (many tears) on Michael Monsieur's (sp?) dedication and service to our country. He was a young kid who gave 110% while serving as a SEAL. His life ended when a bomb was thrown, bounced off his chest and landed in front of him and near his team. He decided to throw himself on it and act as a shield to protect his fellow soldiers. He died 30 minutes later.

The best speech of the night was Fred Thompson. We heard more of a political message and he said just what the delegates wanted to hear.

Senator Lieberman was intriguing to the delegates but the crowd was a little less enthusiastic. Hardly hard to believe--he's a Democrat. But I think everyone realized he has an important role. This is going to be a close election and we need votes.

I am off to see STYX at the Depot in Minneapolis--if I haven't missed the bus. Maybe I'll stop by and see Dennis Miller at the Ordway instead. Or it may be a really good idea to go to bed.
